HMRC Authorisation for VAT

Before you can submit any VAT data, you must give My Tax Digital permission to interact with your VAT account on HMRC's system.

  1. From the Business home screen, click on MTD VAT then HMRC Authorisation.
  2. Click on the 'Continue to HMRC' button.
  3. You will be securely redirected to the HMRC Government Gateway website.
  4. Click, 'Continue' on the 'Allow your software to connect with HMRC' page.
  5. Click, 'Sign in to the HMRC online service'.
  6. Enter the Government Gateway user ID and password associated with your VAT-registered business.
  7. HMRC will ask you to confirm that you consent to My Tax Digital accessing your VAT data and submitting returns on your behalf.
  8. Once permission is granted, you will be automatically redirected back to My Tax Digital.
  9. Confirm your VAT Registration Number (VRN) is correct and click 'Update'.
  10. IMPORTANT: If you receive the response: The client and/or agent is not authorised, make sure you have authorised My Tax Digital using the Government Gateway account associated with your VAT account. If not, click on the HMRC Authorisation tile to reauthorise.
